This project was conceived in 2021 as something I thought I could finish quickly and easily. It was scheduled to be completed in 2022, but since it was the first project I produced using Pro Tools, there was a bit of a learning curve (and some heavy procrastination with regards to said learning curve). The basic tracks were built out of four improvisations with the Roland MC-707 groovebox. To these I added vocal, mellotron, synth and drum overdubs, as well as samples of pre-written and predictive texts read by a synthesized voice to make the whole affair sound like a deranged nature documentary. There are no guitars on the album by design, a first for me. The four pieces are about the subconsciously self destructive (yet sometimes vital) tendencies of the human species: predation, nostalgia, wrath, and hubris. The main inspiration for the project comes from two of my favorite records. The idea to do four long suites (standing on rather uncommercial ground) comes from the 1973 Yes album Tales From Topographic Oceans. And I was inspired by the electronic music collective the Orb and their 1995 album Orbus Terrarum for the overall tone and downtempo surrreal ambience.
